Engineering and production

The capacity and efficiency of mass transfer and heat exchange columns primarily relies on the right construction and selection of the column internals. MTE has many years of experience in designing and manufacturing of internals according to the latest developments, finding an efficient and economic solution for your application.

Engineering and design

Availability of design software enables us to take up design and drafting service for all mass transfer equipment. We have experience in designing and drafting various types of column packing, internals and trays in a wide range of applications.

MTE design team comprises of engineering professionals and process consultants that provide:

  • Entire design including process design of specific absorption units
  • Mechanical design (3D software)
  • Hydraulic and mechanical design of packed and trayed columns with MTE in-house software
  • De-bottlenecking & revamping of existing columns

MTE Engineering & Design

Hydraulic operation of packed beds can be accurately rated using correlations that have been developed from actual performance data. The “Generalized Pressure Drop Correlation” is the most frequently published design tool for calculating packed bed diameter and determining the operating capacity for most “Generic” random packing.
Where reliable performance is required in high pressure hydrocarbon systems, more specific design models should be employed. We are able to provide hydraulic rating sheets indicating the calculated pressure drop, liquid hold-up and % flood for any packed bed providing that sufficient process data is made available. As a minimum, we would require a profile of internal vapor and liquid loads and actual densities as well as liquid surface tension and viscosity.

MTE has possibilities to predict mass transfer efficiency and calculate the packed bed height for the most common absorption, stripping and heat transfer systems where sufficient reliable data is available from which to compile design models. Multi component distillation systems should be simulated to evaluate the number of theoretical trays required, as well as providing tray by tray vapor and liquid loads and physical properties. In most cases we can supply suitable HETP data and advice packed bed height from this data.
The hydraulic data used to develop the design models used by MTE, are in most cases sourced from well engineered operating columns with associated internals properly designed to be compatible with the duty.

Production

Our modern production facility is based in Staphorst, in the north east of The Netherlands. In this region, we benefit from the knowledge of metalworking which is available since many decades. The availability of this experience means MTE Process Technology is able to find a technical solution for most applications.

Metal workshop

In our metal workshop, internals are produced from sheet materials of final products by cutting, bending, punching, milling and welding. We are able to weld according to TIG and MIG/MAG procedures as well as spot welding. A wide range of materials like stainless steel grades 304L, 316L, 321, 316Ti and 904L or exotic materials like Duplex, Monel, Hastelloy and Titanium can be processed in our workshop. All parts are engineered with our 3D Solidworks software; CNC laser cutting and bending are being used to guarantee a perfect fit during assembly. All our welders have the required certificates for each of above mentioned welding processes.

Plastic workshop

Our plastic workshop is equipped with a CNC milling machine to produce plastic column internals. In the workshop all most used plastics like HDPE, PP, PVC and PVDF are manufactured into parts before they are assembled and welded by an (extrusion) welding process. We also have an injection molding location for column packing or special parts.

Stamping workshop

In our stamping workshop we produce tray parts, hardware and different types of packing. By developing our own dies, we are able to meet the quality requirements as specified in the data sheets. To guarantee this quality, the complete production process from the purchase of raw material to packaging, is controlled by MTE Process Technology. Because of these facilities, we are very flexible in producing packing. Together with our own stock of raw material, we are able to provide fast-track deliveries for urgent requirements.
